Myopia is the medical term for nearsightedness, which is an eye condition where light from distant objects focuses in front of, instead of on, the retina.
As a result, it causes objects at a distance to appear blurry.
Myopia is the fastest growing health condition affecting children around the world. The onset of myopia in children is happening at a younger age due to prolonged near work and limited outdoor activities. There are currently approximately 30% of Canadians affected by myopia. If left untreated, myopia can progress, leading to an increased risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts and myopic degeneration.
What We Can Do
Myopia management is a vision care approach that includes prevention, early detection through screening, appropriate correction through specialty lenses (glasses and/or contacts), lifestyle recommendations and pharmacological interventions to reduce myopia progression.
The process starts with a comprehensive eye exam to determine the most suitable treatment method. Depending on the degree of your child’s myopia the doctor will present different effective methods that will help to slow down your child’s myopia progression. Please call our office to book your appointment.
